How to Add Videos to a Shopify Store (3 Ways)

Three ways to put video on a Shopify store: as product media, in a theme video section, or as shoppable video widgets with your products tagged. Step by step, with what each one is good for.

Short answer: there are three ways to add video to a Shopify store. (1) Product media: in Shopify admin, open a product, click Add media in the Media section and upload an MP4 or MOV, or paste a YouTube or Vimeo link. (2) A theme video section: in Online Store → Themes → Customize, add a Video section to any page and paste a link or upload a file. (3) Shoppable video: use an app such as Byvano to show your Instagram Reels, TikToks and YouTube Shorts as a carousel, grid, stories or floating player, with the products in each video tagged so shoppers can open them in one tap.

Method 1: add a video to a Shopify product page

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
  2. In the Media section, click Add media (or drag the file in) and upload the video, or choose Add from URL and paste a YouTube or Vimeo link.
  3. Drag the video to where you want it among the product images. Many stores put it second, right after the main photo.
  4. Save. The video now plays in the product gallery of most Shopify themes.

Shopify accepts MP4 and MOV uploads. Keep product clips short (15 to 60 seconds), shot vertically or square for mobile, and make sure they make sense with the sound off, because most shoppers browse muted.

Method 2: add a video section to your home or collection page

  1. Go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize.
  2. Choose the page template (home page, a collection, a product template).
  3. Click Add section and pick Video (some themes call it Video hero or Video with text).
  4. Upload a file or paste a YouTube or Vimeo URL, set the cover image and whether it autoplays, then Save.

This is good for one brand film on the home page. It is less good for many short videos: each section holds one video, and none of them link to a product.

Method 3: add shoppable videos with the products tagged

Most stores already have dozens of good short clips: the Reels, TikToks and Shorts they made for social media. Shoppable video puts those clips on the store and tags the products in them, so a shopper goes from watching to the product page in one tap.

With Byvano the steps are:

  1. Connect your store and your Instagram, YouTube or TikTok account (or upload video files directly).
  2. Import the videos you want on the site.
  3. Tag products from your catalogue on each video.
  4. Choose a widget: carousel, grid, stories, floating or inline.
  5. Place it on the home page, a collection page or product pages. On a product page, the widget shows the videos tagged with that product automatically.
  6. Measure views, plays and product clicks for each video.

Byvano uses flat monthly pricing with no charge per view, and every feature is free until 17 March 2027.

How long should a Shopify product video be?

Between 15 and 60 seconds for the product gallery and for shoppable widgets. Shoppers on a product page want an answer to one question (how it looks in use, how it fits, how big it is), not a story. Longer explainers and tutorials belong on YouTube, linked from the product description. Shoot vertically if most of your traffic is on phones, and add captions or on-screen text so the clip works without sound.

Tips so clips help sales instead of slowing the page

  • Keep the first seconds about the product. Shoppers decide almost immediately whether to keep watching.
  • Load clips lazily. A clip below the fold should not load before the shopper scrolls to it; good widgets handle this for you.
  • Use vertical clips on mobile. Most Shopify traffic is on phones, where 9:16 fills the screen.
  • Put clips where the decision happens: on the product page, near the Add to cart button.
  • Reuse what already works on social. The Reels with the most saves and shares are usually the best product-page videos.

Keep the social side running too

The same Byvano account includes a social media scheduler for stores, so you can publish a video to Instagram, Facebook and YouTube on a schedule and show it on your Shopify store from one dashboard.
