YouTube Video Upload Specs 2026: Size, Format and Shorts

The YouTube upload settings that matter: 16:9 at 1920 × 1080 for regular videos, 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 for Shorts up to 3 minutes, MP4 with H.264 and AAC, and what happens to 640 × 480 or vertical footage.

Short answer: for a regular YouTube video, upload an MP4 file with H.264 video and AAC audio, at 1920 × 1080 (16:9) or higher, at the frame rate you recorded in. For a YouTube Short, upload a vertical or square video, ideally 1080 × 1920 (9:16), up to 3 minutes long. YouTube does not require a bitrate, but for 1080p it recommends about 8 Mbps (12 Mbps at 50 or 60 fps).

What size should a YouTube video be?

The standard player on a computer is 16:9, so 1920 × 1080 is the safe default for regular videos. YouTube accepts higher resolutions (1440p, 4K) and lower ones; 4K uploads get a higher-quality encode, which often makes even 1080p playback look sharper.

Does a 640 × 480 video fit on YouTube?

Yes. 640 × 480 is a 4:3 video and YouTube plays it as it is: on a 16:9 player you see black bars on the left and right. Do not stretch it to 16:9 before uploading; that distorts the picture. If the footage is for a modern channel, crop or reframe it to 16:9, or to 9:16 if it can work as a Short.

What about vertical and square videos?

The player adapts to the shape of the video. A vertical or square video of 3 minutes or less is treated as a Short; a longer one plays as a regular video with bars on the sides.

YouTube Shorts specs

  • Shape: vertical (9:16) or square (1:1). 1080 × 1920 fills the screen.
  • Length: up to 3 minutes.
  • Safe area: keep text and faces away from the bottom fifth of the frame, where the title, channel name and buttons sit, and away from the right edge, where the like and comment buttons are.
  • Sound: clear audio matters more than resolution. Most Shorts are watched with sound on.

Which file format is best for YouTube?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the most reliable choice: every phone and editing app exports it, and YouTube processes it quickly. MOV, WebM and other formats are accepted too. Use progressive scan (not interlaced), keep the original frame rate, and export with a "fast start" (moov atom at the front) so the upload can be processed while it is still arriving.

How large can a YouTube upload be?

YouTube allows files up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is smaller. Videos longer than 15 minutes need a verified channel. For most store videos, a 1080p MP4 of a few minutes is a few hundred megabytes at most.

Common upload problems and fixes

  • The video looks blurry right after upload. YouTube processes the low resolution first; HD and 4K versions appear a few minutes later. Wait before judging quality.
  • Black bars on every side. The file has bars baked in (for example a 16:9 frame placed inside a 4:3 export). Export at the native shape of the footage instead.
  • A vertical clip did not become a Short. Check that it is 3 minutes or less and vertical or square; anything longer plays as a regular video.
  • Audio out of sync. Usually a variable frame rate from a phone screen recording. Re-export at a constant frame rate.
  • Upload stuck at 0%. Try a different browser or the YouTube Studio app, and keep the file name free of unusual characters.

Posting product videos to YouTube on a schedule

If you post product demos, tutorials or Shorts every week, uploading each one by hand is the part that slips. Byvano's YouTube scheduler uploads videos and Shorts to your channel at the time you set, with title, description, privacy (public, unlisted or private), category and the made-for-kids setting, from the same calendar as your Instagram and Facebook posts. It is free until 17 March 2027.

The same clip can then go on your product page as a shoppable video, so the Short keeps selling after it leaves the Shorts feed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best resolution to upload to YouTube?

1920 × 1080 (16:9) for regular videos, or 3840 × 2160 for 4K. For Shorts, 1080 × 1920 (9:16).

Does a 640x480 video fit on YouTube?

Yes. It is a 4:3 video, so YouTube plays it with black bars on the sides of a 16:9 player. Do not stretch it to 16:9.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes, in a vertical or square shape.

What video format does YouTube recommend?

An MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio at 48 kHz.

What bitrate should I use for a 1080p YouTube upload?

YouTube's reference is about 8 Mbps at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at 50 or 60 fps. There is no required bitrate.

Can I schedule YouTube videos and Shorts?

Yes. Byvano uploads videos and Shorts to your YouTube channel at the time you choose, alongside Instagram and Facebook posts.
