How to Post on Instagram From Desktop (PC or Mac)

Post to Instagram from a PC or Mac, schedule posts from a browser, and fix the file problems that stop desktop uploads and scheduled posts.

You can post on Instagram from a desktop computer without a phone or an emulator. Here is how to post on Instagram from desktop in under a minute: open instagram.com in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, click Create (the plus icon in the sidebar), upload a photo or video from your computer, write the caption and click Share. That covers most feed posts.

The harder part is everything around the upload. Story tools and editing are more limited in the browser, scheduling needs a professional account, and a file that uploads fine by hand can be rejected by a scheduling tool. This guide walks through the three desktop methods, when a store owner should use each one, and the file rules that decide whether a post actually goes live.

Three ways to post on Instagram from a computer

  • instagram.com in a browser. Free, built in, and it publishes immediately. Best for a single post you are ready to share now.
  • Meta Business Suite. Meta's free desktop tool for professional accounts. Useful when you also run a Facebook Page and want to schedule posts for both with Meta's own tools.
  • A social media scheduler. A web app that connects to your Instagram professional account through Instagram's official publishing API. Best when you plan a week or a month of content in one sitting.

Method 1: How to post on Instagram from desktop with instagram.com

  1. Go to instagram.com and log in. If you manage more than one account, check which profile is active before you upload anything.
  2. Click Create in the sidebar and choose to create a post. Depending on your account, a Reel option may also appear here.
  3. Drag your files into the window or click Select from computer. Selecting several images or videos creates a carousel.
  4. Choose the crop. Portrait (4:5) fills the most space in the feed on a phone, which usually suits product photos best.
  5. Adjust the image or apply a filter if you use them, then click Next.
  6. Write your caption, add alt text under the accessibility settings, and add a location or tag people if the post needs it.
  7. Click Share.

Two things catch people out. First, editing in the browser is basic: text overlays, stickers and music are more complete in the mobile app, so finish creative work in your design tool before you upload. Second, the browser follows the same account permissions as the app, so an option you do not have on mobile will not appear on desktop either.

Can you post Instagram Stories from a desktop?

Story posting in the browser has changed several times. Some accounts now see a Story option on instagram.com and others still do not, and where it exists the stickers, music and effects are more limited than in the app. If you cannot see it, use Meta Business Suite or a scheduler that supports Stories. Avoid workarounds such as switching the page into a mobile view in your browser's developer tools; they break whenever Instagram updates its site.

Method 2: Post and schedule from Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite runs in a desktop browser at business.facebook.com. To use it for Instagram, your account needs to be a professional account (Business or Creator) that is connected to the business assets you manage in Meta's tools, which in practice usually means alongside a Facebook Page.

  1. Open Meta Business Suite and select the business that owns your Instagram account.
  2. Open the content or planner area and start a new post or Reel.
  3. Choose Instagram as a placement, and your Facebook Page too if the same post should go there.
  4. Upload the media, write the caption, and check the preview for each placement.
  5. Choose to schedule instead of publishing now, then pick the date and time.

Meta has changed how far ahead and how many posts a day you can schedule more than once, so check the current limits in Meta Business Suite's help center rather than trusting an old guide. The trade-off is scope: it only covers Meta's own platforms, and reading which posts actually drove results across both accounts takes more digging than it should.

Method 3: Schedule Instagram posts from a desktop scheduler

A scheduler is the right choice when posting from a computer is a routine rather than a one-off. You collect product photos and videos once, write captions in a batch, and let each post go out when your followers are most active. Schedulers publish through Instagram's Content Publishing API, which comes with rules of its own:

  • Professional accounts only. Meta's developer documentation limits API publishing to Instagram Business and Creator accounts. A personal account has to be switched to a professional account in the app settings, which is free, before any scheduling tool can post for it.
  • A daily cap. According to Meta's Content Publishing documentation, an account can publish 100 posts through the API in a rolling 24-hour period, and a carousel counts as one post. Few stores come close, but it matters if several tools post to the same account.
  • Some features stay in the app. Meta's documentation states that shopping tags and filters are not supported when publishing through the API, so posts that need product tags are still finished in Instagram itself.

Byvano works this way. It runs in any desktop browser, connects to your Instagram Business or Creator account, and schedules and publishes photos, videos, Reels and Stories from one calendar alongside posts for your Facebook Page. Carousels are not supported in Byvano's composer, so build those in the app or in Meta Business Suite. The Instagram scheduler page shows how drafts, the calendar and publishing fit together.

File rules that decide whether a desktop post goes live

The browser uploader is forgiving: it accepts common image formats and crops for you. The publishing API used by schedulers is stricter, and most "it worked on my phone" failures come from these requirements in Meta's media documentation:

  • Images must be JPEG, up to 8 MB, in the sRGB colour space. Export PNG graphics from Canva, Figma or Photoshop as JPEG before scheduling them.
  • Image aspect ratio must sit between 4:5 and 1.91:1. A 1080 × 1350 portrait is the tallest image the API accepts, so taller artwork needs cropping first.
  • Videos and Reels must be MOV or MP4 with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, between 3 seconds and 15 minutes long, and no larger than 300 MB. A vertical 1080 × 1920 frame is the recommended size.
  • Story videos can be up to 60 seconds and 100 MB.
  • Captions can run to 2,200 characters, with at most 30 hashtags and 20 @mentions.

For the recommended dimension of every format, from feed images to profile photos, see our Instagram post size guide.

Which desktop method should a store owner use?

  • You want to post something right now: use instagram.com. There is nothing to set up.
  • You schedule Instagram and a Facebook Page and only want Meta's tools: use Meta Business Suite.
  • You run a weekly content plan for a store: use a scheduler, so drafts, publish times and results live in one place instead of your camera roll. If you are weighing up tools, start with our comparison of the best social media schedulers for Shopify stores.

Whichever route you choose, publish when your own followers are online rather than at a generic time. Finding your own best time to post from your account insights takes a few minutes, and if Reels and Stories are most of your content, this guide to scheduling Reels, posts and Stories also covers how to measure them afterwards.

Common problems when posting from a computer

  • You cannot find the Create button. Widen the browser window so the full sidebar shows, and make sure you are on instagram.com rather than a third-party viewer.
  • The upload says the file is not supported. Convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPEG and re-export videos as MP4 with H.264 and AAC.
  • A scheduled post failed. Check the image format and aspect ratio against the API rules above. A tall 3:4 or 9:16 image scheduled as a feed photo is a frequent cause.
  • The post went to the wrong account. Check the active profile before uploading, and connect each brand account separately in your scheduler so every post has one clear destination.

Frequently asked questions

Can you post on Instagram from a computer for free?

Yes. instagram.com lets any account upload posts from a browser at no cost, and Meta Business Suite is free for professional accounts. Paid schedulers add calendars, batching and analytics on top.

Can you schedule Instagram posts from a PC?

Yes, if the account is a professional Business or Creator account. You can schedule in Meta Business Suite or in a scheduler that uses Instagram's official publishing API.

Why does my image post from the app but fail in a scheduler?

Schedulers publish through Instagram's API, which only accepts JPEG images with an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1. PNG files and very tall images need converting or cropping first.

Do I need a Facebook Page to post on Instagram from desktop?

Not for instagram.com, which works with any account. Meta Business Suite works through the business assets you manage in Meta's tools, and some schedulers connect to an Instagram professional account directly without a Page.
