Instagram publishing limits: the 50-a-day API cap and media requirements for Reels

Instagram caps every account at 50 API-published posts per 24 hours, and silently refuses Reels that are the wrong aspect, duration or format. Here is the full list, with the specs that work.

Instagram's Content Publishing API has a hard rolling 24-hour cap: 50 published posts per account. The 51st attempt is refused with the message "You reached maximum number of posts that is allowed to be published by Content Publishing API". Unlike Facebook's anti-spam block, Instagram's cap is formally documented and consistent across accounts. Combined with the platform's strict media requirements for Reels, it is the single largest source of silent publishing failures we see for ecommerce stores.

The 50-per-24h Instagram publishing limit, in practice

Three things worth knowing about this instagram publishing limit:

  • It is per account, not per app. Posts you publish through the Instagram mobile app, through Meta Business Suite, or through any other third-party tool all count towards the same 50.
  • It is a rolling 24 hours, not a calendar day. Publish 50 posts between 09:00 Monday and 00:00 Tuesday and your next window opens at 09:00 Tuesday, not midnight.
  • Carousels count as one post, not one per image. A 10-image carousel is one slot.

Stories and Reels both count towards the same 50 as regular feed posts. There is no separate Reels-only quota.

What Byvano does when you schedule more than 50 in a day

Byvano's Instagram scheduler tracks every Instagram publish per account and defers anything that would exceed the 50-per-24h cap. Schedule 120 Reels for the weekend and:

  • The first 50 publish at their scheduled times on Saturday.
  • The next 50 publish as the earlier posts age out of the 24-hour window — effectively spaced across Sunday.
  • The remaining 20 pick up on Monday.
  • None of the 120 is marked failed. They all keep their caption, hashtags and tagged products.

If the same Instagram account is also posting through another tool and runs out of slots before Byvano's own count caught up, Byvano notices the refusal, backs off for 30 minutes, and tries again. No user action is required.

Instagram Reels media requirements

A Reel that is the wrong aspect ratio, too long, or in an unsupported format comes back from Instagram's encoder as "ERROR" with no explanation. These are the specifications that work:

  • Format: MP4 or MOV container, H.264 video codec, AAC audio codec. HEVC, VP9 and HE-AAC audio are rejected.
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 (0.5625). Reels submitted as 16:9, 1:1 or 4:5 are refused with the generic "ERROR".
  • Resolution: 1080×1920 is ideal. Minimum 540 on the short side. Maximum 1920 on the long side.
  • Duration: 3 to 90 seconds. Shorter or longer is rejected.
  • Frame rate: 23 to 60 fps.
  • File size: Under 1 GB.

Feed video and Stories have different rules

  • Feed video: aspect 4:5 (0.8) to 1.91:1, duration up to 60 seconds, same format and codec as Reels.
  • Stories: 9:16 ideal, duration up to 60 seconds, otherwise same codec and format rules.
  • Photos: JPEG or PNG, aspect 4:5 to 1.91:1, shorter side at least 320 pixels, under 8 MB.

How Byvano pre-flights Instagram media

Before Byvano hands a file to Instagram's publishing API, it probes the file locally and checks it against the rules above. If anything is off, you see a plain-English message — "This video is 1920×1080 (ratio 1.78). Reels need a vertical 9:16 video (ratio ≈ 0.56) — re-crop or re-export" — instead of Instagram's generic ERROR hours later. For video codec and container issues (HE-AAC audio, HEVC video, .webm files), Byvano re-encodes to H.264/AAC MP4 automatically before publishing, so uploads from TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Canva work without a manual export step. Common Instagram publishing errors and what they mean

  • "Instagram could not process the media (ERROR)" — the file passed upload but Instagram's encoder gave up. Usually aspect ratio, duration or codec. Byvano's pre-flight catches most of these.
  • "You reached maximum number of posts..." — the 50-per-24h cap. Byvano queues around it automatically.
  • "The submitted image with aspect ratio () cannot be published" — the image is outside the 4:5 to 1.91:1 window. Re-crop.
  • "Instagram no longer accepts the saved authorisation" — the connection expired or the user changed their Instagram password. Reconnect and the paused posts resume.
  • "copyright_check_status: matches_found" — Instagram detected copyrighted audio or video. The post cannot publish as-is; use content you own the rights to.

Is the 50-per-day Instagram limit ever lifted?

Meta does not offer a way to raise it for individual accounts. Larger media businesses using the Content Publishing API are subject to the same cap. The practical workaround is simple: split your content across multiple linked Instagram accounts (brand plus sub-brand, or English plus localised accounts) and let Byvano schedule across all of them from one dashboard.

Why ecommerce teams choose Byvano for Instagram scheduling

  • Automatic 50-per-day queue. Schedule as many Reels as your calendar needs; Byvano respects Instagram's cap without failing posts.
  • Media pre-flight. Catch aspect, duration and codec problems before Instagram does. Clear messages, not "ERROR".
  • Automatic re-encoding. Files from TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Canva and phone cameras are converted to Instagram-safe MP4 in the background.
  • Reconnect reminders. If an Instagram authorisation expires, you see a banner inside the dashboard and get an email the next time you sign in — before posts start failing.
  • Launch offer: every feature of the scheduler and shoppable video is free until 31 December 2026. Create an account to connect your first Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

How many Instagram posts can I publish through an API in one day?

Instagram's Content Publishing API caps every account at 50 posts in any rolling 24 hours, counting feed posts, Reels and Stories together. The 51st attempt is refused until an earlier post ages out of the window.

What aspect ratio do Instagram Reels require?

9:16 vertical (ratio 0.5625). Reels submitted at 16:9, 1:1 or 4:5 come back as a generic "could not process the media" error. Feed videos accept 4:5 to 1.91:1, and Stories want 9:16.

Why does Instagram say "could not process the media" with no detail?

Instagram's encoder returns an opaque "ERROR" when any of aspect ratio, duration, codec, container, frame rate, resolution or copyright check fails. Byvano probes the file before submitting it and surfaces the real reason.
